Freedom
~
Once upon a fairy tale
In my naivety, I believed in love
And forever-after happiness
Till in disillusion I shrugged off
The cloak of self-deceit
And freed myself to breathe
To find myself, allow myself to be
With no stifling restrictions
At last I was free, the inimitable me
I found my compass to check my progress
Without which I would surely have been lost
The devil’s daughter, saved by He
Who truly set me free

Good sentiments, Denise.
Do you know Mary Oliver’s poetry? Judith posted an excert from one of her favourites ~ The Journey :
“One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice–”
When we trust ourselves . . . we know how to live.
Thank you so much, Nancy! That is exactly IT! Nice to see someone else with like thinking. Will google her. Thanks again.
The hardest chains to break are the ones we wrap ourselves in. Once done though, we must keep a link, so as not to repeat. Beautiful poem Denise.
This poem arrived in my head when I woke up this morning. My muse let me sleep for a change, lol! Thanks, Jack.
It is unfortunate that the wholesome things of your opening are a deceitful illusion for many and should not be in a just world.
I can’t blame others, Carl. I was young and stupid!!! Led by hormones. In a hurry to leave an unhappy home. Excuses… excuses!
“Till in disillusion I shrugged off
The cloak of self-deceit”
“To deceive others is discourteous
but to deceive oneself
is disastrous.”
You’re quite right, Ben. Sometimes we think it is less painful to blind ourselves to reality. But if we want to survive, we have to remove the blindfold.
Freedom indeed, Denise. But never “the devil’s daughter” I am sure.
Possibly misguided sometimes!
A nice poem about personal growth.
Thank you.
John
Close enough, John, I regret to say. Thank you, but you’re too kind. Anyway it’s in the past and all but forgotten.
A lovely poem
Thank you so much, Tilly.
Is there one without regrets of the past? Once we find peace within we make wiser choices.
I think there some who don’t put a foot wrong, Maxi, but they would be in the minority for sure! The important thing is to learn from our mistakes.
a lovely homage to the one that set you free…i found a similar freedom many a year ago after a very dark period….
I can only marvel at the turns my life has taken, Brian…
Good poem, but I rather like retaining a belief in fairy-tale love!
Thanks, Col. Don’t tell anyone, but I also still hanker after that too!
That is truly emotional and very good..well done buddy!
Thanks so much, Patrecia. Hope you have enjoyed and are still enjoying your Birthday! xxx
Wonderful
Thank you, Mark! Hope the ankle is healing.
That compass: it’s a great thing…I love this. Such a feeling of liberation.
Thanks, Kate. It was liberating, but also quite scary at first.
True…the poem can be cosidered as a metaphor to the feeling of a caged bird but set free for its first flight as desired.
Or another poem for another time… Thanks so much, Epizeuxis!
I completely understand your point of view here. I guess it’s all part of the journey of life. You are an insightful and sensitive writer!
I think you’re right, Selma. And the twists and turns ones journey can take. I do believe that you must listen to your inner self as well.
These are the things that make life interesting, the hard things we work through.
That’s so true, Andra. Who said life is easy, eh?
I believe everybody passes through this phase Denise, said or unsaid. Courage lies in getting hold of oneself and uplift our sagging spirit.
Nice poem.
Some people accept the status quo without question, Sunamu. Others have to do something about it, depending on exactly what are the conditions of the said status quo. If we are deceiving ourselves in order to stay in a certain situation, then sooner or later one should face the truth.
