Deep within our consciousness,

Hidden away from prying eyes,

There is a drive to drink and eat,

To stay alive and to compete,

While our bodies are driven,

No matter how much we are given,

To desire more, more, more

Food, wealth, prestige, power

As we aim to gain beyond the same

And when our race is run,

When our lives are done,

The rabble will scrabble

To take their due –

And the wheel spins on.

Snow/Sleet in Jozi

Cold Old Bones

Winter crept, while we slept,

Into our homes and our cold old bones,

And joints with stiffly (f)rigid digits.

As we awoke the freezing air

Held us fast there in its grasp,

Held us tight with all its might,

We fight to breathe, we’d like to leave

For warmer climes, for heated homes

To ease the hurt of these cold old bones.

Sunset

I love to watch and see

The expressions in the sky

From the wond’rous beauty of the sunrise,

Hear the morning chorus sing,

To the peace and calm of evening

As the twitters fade and die;

The sun descends from heaven

And takes with him the light

So we can sleep at peace

Throughout the night.

Tick, tick, tick as the gas heats the burner

and the water begins to murmur

tick, tick, cheeeeeeee—– softly

pligh, pligh, pligh, bubbles rise and pop

getting bigger, rising higher,

click, clack, click, clack, clickclack, clickclackclickclack

boiling faster and faster, bumping, knocking

time is six oh three

clickclackclickclackclickclackclickclack

they’ll be ready by six oh nine for the soft centre

and six twenty for the hard boiled

snifffffff aaah

the rich smell of coffee fills the air

grab a plate and some toast

breakfast is ready…

Google has released a series of time-lapse images that show the massive changes that have occurred to certain areas of the Earth’s surface roughly over the period 1984-2012.

The images show, year by year, the massive changes that have occurred to various areas of the planet, including Dubai’s costal expansion, Las Vegas urban growth (1986-2012), Brazilian Amazon deforestation, Lake Urmia drying up, Wyoming coal-mining and the Columbia glacier retreat (for the purposes of animation this image changes on a bigger time-scale than year-by-year).

To create these animated images Google joined forces with the US Geological Survey, NASA and TIME magazine while Carnegie Mellon University’s CREATE Lab built the HTML5 site that made the animations interactive and enables users to browse them.
