Preoccupied
.
The rain rapped on the window pane,
“Hurry up, let me in,” it cried,
But I, safe inside, sitting by the fire,
Heard nothing but the crackling flames.

SMOKE
*
Smoke curls
Unfurls
Wafts
Through the air
To disappear
No trace
No trail
No hint
No tinge
Vanished forever
Into the ether
Another soul
Passed
Sacred fire
Funeral pyre

EYES
.
Burning eyes
Are eyes of anger,
Lowered eyes
Are eyes of shame,
Dancing eyes
Are eyes of mischief
As we all play the game.
.
We search each other’s eyes
To distinguish fact from lies.
Lips don’t always tell the truth
(And you’re the living proof),
But your wide,
Innocent eyes
Convinced me otherwise.
.
Burning eyes
Are eyes of anger,
Lowered eyes
Are eyes of shame,
Dancing eyes
Are eyes of mischief
As we all play the game.

UNREST
UNREST
Evolution –
Revolution –
But there will be no resolution
Without inspiration and perspiration.
A rash of unrest is spreading
Like a fire out of control –
A conflagration of feelings.
Take away man’s ability to provide
Food and shelter for his family
And the spark is lit;
There is nothing to lose.
Desperation is the match
For those who fail to scratch
A living from the superfluity of the ‘haves’.
Beware those who try to subvert
Actions aimed at charity
For popularity.
Governments are failing their poor,
Food is unaffordable to more and more.
Where will it end?
And what does it portend?

Burning Bridges
Sidey’s Weekend Challenge – 22.10.2010: Bridges
Burning Bridges
I burnt the bridges to my past,
Finally and forever,
With the fire in my heart.
No what ifs and no upsets,
Ended for eternity,
Ashes to ashes with no regrets.

Forest Fires
Forest Fires
A single act of carelessness
Is all it takes to set in motion
Such catastrophic consequences,
Endangering many humans,
Plants, animals, homes and livelihoods.
At certain times of the year
Vegetation is tinder dry,
Highly flammable,
Combustible and susceptible
To outbreaks of fire.
It is criminal, unlawful,
Immoral and outrageous
To fail to take precautions
To safeguard against these
Dangerous conditions.
The smallest spark could be the cause
Of a gigantic conflagration,
Escalating rapidly into an inferno
Taking the lives of innocent people
Animals and plants.

Street Children
Street Children
God help the children
In the harsh cold of winter,
Bones showing through bare threads,
Bloodshot eyes, puffed and red,
Paint, glue, meths, God knows what else,
Cheapest way to face a world
Of days dimmed to gloom,
Tranquilised, anaesthetised,
Homeless… helpless…
Huddled around a fire, shivering,
Tongues of flame sputtering
In the icy wind.
