Rolling the Dice
With a roll of the dice
You can throw away your life!
Don’t let them entice you to try.
The temptation to win
Can be very, very strong
But you must learn to turn a blind eye.
The odds are too great
And you’ve too much to lose.
Don’t make the mistake
Of leaving it to fate
When luck is so fickle
And the prospect of winning so remote.

Your poem should be used in the Responsible Gambling ad campaign!

Thanks, Cindy. I am struggling (not very successfully) with trying not to sound like I’m lecturing in this type of poem – like the Aids and Drunken Driving ones as well.

A message to all gamblers!!! 🙂
“The odds are too great
And you’ve too much to lose.
Don’t make the mistake
Of leaving it to fate”… But these four lines are more than just a warning to gamblers; a reminder to all of us..

Thanks for the comment, SatyaKam. When I first visited a casino I came away knowing that I had a problem – and that I daren’t go again.

It breaks my heart that people trust their dreams and future now to the roll of a dice… no more hard work and innovation – just lady luck…. 😦

Some are just so gullible and throw their hard-earned money away. Dreadful!

So true!
It occurs to me that the last line might be changed so that the two verses match. How about something like:
And those dreams of a win mostly fake.

or ‘and your dreams of winning could be fake’. Yes, maybe. Actually, on second thoughts, no, because it is still too hopeful!

Very well done, Adee. It doesn’t come across as a lecture either.
