Sport is the Bond
If education is the key
To the upliftment of the poor,
Then sport is the inspiration
For the unification of the nation!
I watched Invictus yesterday
And was bombarded by memories –
The feeling of togetherness,
The strength of one-ness,
The excitement and delight
Of winning as a team –
Yet it was not only about the victory.
Our hosting of the SWC
Has resurrected these feelings once again
And we must build on this while we can.
Up ‘til now, on SABC TV,
Some sports are for the rich
While some are for the poor
And they decide what we see.
This is not how it’s meant to be!
We are one nation, one people,
And should all have equal access to sport,
To foster and develop our sense of unity
And pride in who we are.
Whether we win or whether we lose
What’s crucial in the end is that sport is the bond
That sets us free.

sport does have sucha a unifying force, perticularly for national pride…i think that there should be more opportunity for international gatherings that allow each to be showcased but also t bring together.

Excellent idea, Brian. In this country we also need more sports clubs in ALL areas to keep the youth off the streets and give them opportunities to emulate their heroes.

Adee, now that I’ve read this post, I realized just how “empty” it feels now that everything is back to normal. Chatting about the soccer over the morning coffee at the office turned into somewhat of a tradition over the last month and now it’s all gone. We will have to find something else to talk about.

Yes, I agree, MTM. I think we need a dedicated Sports channel – not on pay TV – so the whole country can watch all major sport, but definitely international sport, at the same time. Same applies to radio.

It’s wonderful to see the spirit in Durban hasn’t been dampened yet, and most people are still sporting their mirror socks and flags. The unity is still very visible amongst our colleagues too which is really great.

I hope the spirit lasts long enough for the authorities to get their act together! Thanks, Halfy. xxx

I believe it can, if the authorities don’t drag their feet and lose momentum. Thanks for the visit!

I think we have to find things we, as a nation, have in common to unite us in purpose and in pride. Sport has proven to bond us together.
