Feeling the Beat

Feeling the Beat

Perhaps it’s the African in me,
But when I write poetry
I like to feel the beat
Beneath my feet.

Walking down the street,
People rushing, pushing, shoving,
The cars sweeping past,
The beat goes fast.

But, in the quiet of the night,
When I’m able to unwind
The drum beat of Africa slows
To fuse with the beat in my heart.

Spring Rain

Sidey’s weekend theme, 27.08.2010: New Beginnings

Spring Rain

I smelled the sweetness of the rain
In the air before it came,
Bringing life back to the earth
After winter’s unhurried death.

The gentle drops fall from the clouds
Following many months of drought
And the soil drinks greedily
To deeply satisfy its thirst.

The circle of the seasons
Is about to start again
As earth maintains its journey
Of orbiting the sun.

Mary

Mary

My phone rang,
Caller unknown,
A message no-one wants,
‘Your son has been killed’
Wrong number.

Since that day, many calls
All to no avail.
Sympathy calls for Mary,
Promises to give me her number
But nothing forthcoming.

The calls are now fewer;
Friends who have been away
And only just heard the news.
I’m sorry Mary, so sorry
I couldn’t reach you.

Flight of Fancy

Flight of Fancy

Oh how I want to fly
On the wings of a butterfly!
To soar among the clouds
Like an eagle in the sky.

Oh how my spirit longs
For space to breathe the air,
Freedom to spread my wings
And strength to persevere.

To be at one with nature
And leave the world behind,
Forgetting the race to riches
With all its narrow confines.

What Happened?

What Happened?

What happened to the sweet innocence of youth?
Where did it go – that newly-opened bloom?
The trust we had has withered and died
And the faith we felt, eroded away with the sands of time.

Would that we could return to those simple years,
Would that we could go back to how we were…
But alas the tears we shed have dried
And our hearts have turned to stone.

Mountains

Mountains

Mountains, mountains,
To the back, to the sides
And to the front of me;
Higher and higher
Like giant stepping stones,
Obstacles to overcome –
The mountains of my life;
Each one higher than the last,
Steeper than the past.
Lift me up, O Lord,
Enable me to get by;
Let me complete the course
And, like the mountains,
Touch the sky.
