The Hungry Thief

The Hungry Thief

I stood
Just inside the door
Watching, waiting,
Barely breathing.
A sound –
Hushed, almost a dream,
Hardly audible,
Scarcely perceptable.
No more.
I watched, waiting,
Nary a noise
Nor a movement.
I left
My post at the door.
Returning later
The food was gone.
One day
I caught my first
Glimpse of the cat.
Starving,
Just skin and bone,
Wound up tight
Ready for flight.

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

    • If I could afford it I would live on a farm with hundreds of ‘unwanted’ dogs and cats! Unfortunately the annual immunizations now cost an arm and a leg…

I managed to spend most of lunchtime feeding my ferals today – they’re getting so nice and plump!

I’m here by way of Jingle’s Thursday Poet’s Rally, by the way.

    • Some animals suffer so!

I saw your name on the list. I have had to leave messages on Jingle’s blogsites apologising that I am unable to do the Thursday Poets’ Rally.
