Feeling the Beat

Perhaps it’s the African in me,
But when I write poetry
I like to feel the beat
Beneath my feet.

Walking down the street,
People rushing, pushing, shoving,
The cars sweeping past,
The beat goes fast.

But, in the quiet of the night,
When I’m able to unwind
The drum beat of Africa slows
To fuse with the beat in my heart.

The drum is perhaps the oldest musical instrument in the world, with every society employing it in varying degrees. However, it is most revered among the people of Africa, where it comes in various forms and fulfills various functions. The drum is the most important musical instrument in Africa.
