The Storm
Clouds massed on the horizon,
Barely visible to the eye,
And suddenly the wind
Arrived out of nowhere,
Howling, lashing the trees,
Branches whipped the air,
Curtains blew, doors banged,
Then it was gone as fast as it came.
The clouds sucked the light
From the midday sun;
Stillness, darkness, quiet.
Suddenly lightning ripped
The dark sky apart
Like a Ming vase broken
Into countless little pieces
On a black tiled floor.
When the thunder crashed
The building vibrated
As compressed air shook
And the whole world waited
For the next act in the show.
Another lightning fork
Split the sky asunder
Chased by the snarl of thunder.
He sat in his room
Listening to the storm.
The staccato cr-a-a-ack
Of the lightening tearing the sky,
Random flashes
And thunder crashes
For a moment took him back
To his time in Iraq.

Thanks, Cindy. I always feel for war veterans having to pick up the pieces and live an ‘ordinary’ life after going through all that danger and, basically, living on their nerves. The adjustment must be huge!

Lovely, visual poetry. Loved the Ming vase image (though I don’t like to think of them broken). We hardly ever get thunderstorms here, but I remember them well from growing up on the prairies.

Thanks GW. We get quite a few here because of our very hot summers… and they can be quite scary. My house has been struck a few times in the past, but I now have some sort of lightning protector on the electricity mains.

Thanks so much BV! We have already had a few this past week and it’s not even summer yet; but I’m not complaining, we need the rain although there wasn’t much of that! Still, enough for the plants so far… Have a good week…

I used to be really scared of storms, but now I actually enjoy them and find them, visually, so beautiful! I’m glad you liked the descriptions…

That was beautiful writing Adee, takes me to what the summer storms can be like up here in Queensland where I live…they said to brace ourselves for cyclones this year. Loved the ending of your poem 🙂 Have a great week my friend xxxx

Thank you Amanda. I was happy to see things will soon be back to normal with you. Hope the cyclone warning is just a precaution… Take care, my friend. xxx 😀

Thank you for the very nice comment. Thank you also for the award. I shall be getting very scarce here soon and really do not want to be involved with challenges, awards and the like until my health is totally back to normal again which is going to take some time. Thanks again; I really appreciate it.
