The Storm

white-lightning Pictures, Images and Photos

The Storm

Clouds massed on the horizon,
Barely visible to the eye,
And suddenly the wind
Arrived out of nowhere,
Howling, lashing the trees,
Branches whipped the air,
Curtains blew, doors banged,
Then it was gone as fast as it came.

The clouds sucked the light
From the midday sun;
Stillness, darkness, quiet.
Suddenly lightning ripped
The dark sky apart
Like a Ming vase broken
Into countless little pieces
On a black tiled floor.

When the thunder crashed
The building vibrated
As compressed air shook
And the whole world waited
For the next act in the show.
Another lightning fork
Split the sky asunder
Chased by the snarl of thunder.

He sat in his room
Listening to the storm.
The staccato cr-a-a-ack
Of the lightening tearing the sky,
Random flashes
And thunder crashes
For a moment took him back
To his time in Iraq.

The Weavers

Weaver Pictures, Images and Photos

The Weavers

Screeching, twittering, flapping wings,
Birds of all kinds: doves,
Sparrows, weavers,
Flying back and forth,
Seemingly at random,
What a commotion!
Over the roof and back again,
Into the trees and out once more.
Leaves are strewn across the lawn,
Whole and ragged pieces
Like the aftermath of a storm,
And when I looked carefully
The little yellow weaver birds
Had built their first nest
In my mulberry tree.

Thick, Soft Grass

Sidey’s Weekend Challenge – 15.10.2010: Grass

Thick, Soft Grass

Strolling on the warm sea sand,
Feeling the grains between our toes,
The moonlight reflecting brightly
On the calm ocean swells,

We’d find a secluded nook
Among the dunes where the grass
Grew thick and soft and we would
Spread our rug on the ground.

Alongside each other we would lie
Looking upwards at the skies,
Watching for shooting stars
To grant our hearts’ desires.

No Choice…

Bees Pictures, Images and Photos

No Choice…

The day following my post,
Where are the Bees,
I discovered two bees
Buzzing in the bathroom
And three more in the kitchen
Buzz, buzz, buzzing at the windows,
Wanting to go outside.

A week or so later I noticed,
Outside in the garden,
A stream of bees coming and going
To and from the airbrick
On the outside bathroom wall.
I kept an eye on the ins and outs
And so life progressed.

Until last Tuesday when I saw
What appeared to be
Millions of bees flying in a frenzy
In the garden outside the bathroom.
They seemed to me
Really upset about something
And so we went inside.

I looked up Bee Removers
In the Yellow Pages
And phoned all the ones
Affiliated to Apiaries
And/or the Department of Agriculture
And with no exception
They all said the only solution
Was extermination.

The bees had built their hive
In the space under the bath
And the Queen could not be removed
Without breaking the wall
And probably the bath.
And so I had no choice
But to carry out their recommendation.

I couldn’t sleep last night
Because now I feel like a murderer!
We know there are far fewer bees,
So why isn’t there a simple solution
Like enticing them out with a scent
Which they find irresistible
And just leaving the Queen behind?

A Romantic Interlude

A Romantic Interlude

Mellow music softly playing
In concert with the silky rustle
Of long skirts gently swaying
And moving in time to the tune.

Her head lay against his chest,
His arm drew her gently closer,
Her heart beat fast within her breast,
Alone in a world of their own…

The Bookworm

book worm freekazoid! Pictures, Images and Photos

The Bookworm

I live in somebody else’s life
In a strange world foreign to me
Because mine is too boring by half
And so I’d rather subsist by proxy.

I travel the world by land, air and sea,
Live in multiple foreign lands,
Experience life in all its diversity
And never cease to admire the variety.

But what I’ve learned throughout this time:
We have inherent values and goals,
And regardless of outward appearance,
Are all inhabited by similar souls.
