Sidey’s weekend challenge: 12.11.2010 – Famous Last Words
(Not so) Famous Last Words
»
Sitting relaxed in the lounge
Reading the Sunday papers
My father called out,
“Shush, not so much noise,”
To his second wife,
Working in the garden.
To which she replied,
“I suppose if I stop breathing,
It will still be too much noise for you.”
Hearing a crash, he looked up
And there she was,
Lying flat on her back,
Dead from a brain haemorrhage
A passing doctor confirmed.

Unbelievable – but I guess such things happen. Imagine having those last words forever coming back to haunt…

there is excellent punch in the poem as well as a heart-rending irony to life.

I agree with you about the irony, Sunamu. I believe we make certain choices in life, but cannot foretell what the consequences will be. Thank you for the visit and comment. 🙂

Probably, knowing my father. They lived in the Cape though and I was in Natal, so I hardly ever saw them.

I think it was one strange coincidence that she dropped down dead just after replying. It would probably have happened even if he hadn’t shushed her… I hope.

We often imagine things like that, but for it to actually happen? Sad, tragic, but somehow a little awe inspiring, too.

Holy Smackerel! and they say timing is every thing…proves one thing …death is so unpredictable that we should fill our moments with kindness because ,,,we just never know. I am truly sorry this happened to your family. Peace be with you and your dad.
