SPIDERS

In my bed at night

I can’t switch off the light

When I know there’s a spider in the room

And when it’s out of sight

I’m ready to take flight

If I know there’s a spider in my home

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people!

  1. Wow! That’s a monster.

I am not afraid of spiders but your poem nailed it . . . I wouldn’t want to share my bedroom with that guy. 😀

  3. i can ‘handle’ having the small ones in the house sometomes, but the BIG ones send me shrieking for the doom or anything that will take them away

  6. Yeurgh!!! I once woke up to find a spider advancing towards me over the duvet, Adeeyoyo! A great but extremely cautionary post today:-D

  7. I got bit by one 25 years ago while sleeping. The bite and infection was the size of a big lemon on my hip. I still have the scar. I don’t look anything like Little Mrs. Muffet. Most spiders are harmless but I’ll stick with butterflies any day.

    • Spider bites can be very painful and affect a large area as well as make you feel ill, I’ve heard. I don’t know much about them, ie whether any species are aggressive towards humans or animals or do they only bite to protect themselves.

  11. At least when you can see something you are scared of, you can deal with it (but if it is hidden – argh). My brother once got bitten by a Red-back spider and when he went to Emergency they sent him home because they didn’t believe him – he had a couple of days agony!

  12. I love spiders – did you know that they catch the mozzies and the other flying thingsies in your room while you are sleeping. Useful little things!

    • Oh yes, I do know that. I had one on the porch and I saw its larder! Yugh. He had to go! As long as they don’t come into my territory, or mess, I’m fine with them. Where have you been Lyndatjie?

  15. That’s a big ‘un. I am chief spider catcher in my house because I live with two die-hard arachnophobes. My husband has been known to climb on tables when a spider is nigh. It is hilarious. Fortunately, I am not scared of spiders and I don’t like to kill them so I don’t mind catching them and letting them go in the garden. But flying cockroaches are another story….Eeeeek.

  16. haha…I don’t fear spiders around here, but I almost moved to AZ and they’ve got black widows and scorpions that crawl in your bed ~ I wasn’t amused!
