SUFFERING
In the care centre
Of this retirement village
I am surrounded by suffering,
Some with Parkinsons,
Some with heart and/or lung disease,
Carrying their life-saving oxygen,
Some dealing with the devastating aftermath of strokes.
Those who pass over in their sleep
Or suddenly from heart failure
Are greatly envied by those suffering and left behind.
Many pray for release,
None are afraid,
All are at peace.
I am like the proverbial fly on the wall,
Watching, waiting…
Admiring the human spirit in the face of adversity…
And wishing I could heal the sick and the suffering!

This is why we need to legalize euthanasia. It’s ridiculous to prolong this suffering.
Let them die in peace.

I agree, where there is no hope whatsoever it is cruel to prolong the agony that some are going through.

Your words raise the age-old question of whether quality of life is more important than life itself, Adee. I believe it is, but it’s a difficult one in practice

It can be a difficult question to answer and, I think the individual should be left to decide.

having volunteered in such a facility the feelings are all too real…i wish i could heal as well…but i am happy in their joy, when they find it…

There is such a wonderful feeling of camaraderie among many of the patients, Brian, and a lovely sense of humour at times too. I have found the experience very humbling and, at the same time, so good for my soul.

This is an amazing poem, Adeeyoyo: and it is the fact that everyone there is at peace that amazes me and makes me hope that perhaps we are given the tools we need when the time comes.

I do think you are right Kate. Sometimes I’m not sure if being a spectator is not actually harder than being the patient in many cases.
