Street Children
God help the children
In the harsh cold of winter,
Bones showing through bare threads,
Bloodshot eyes, puffed and red,
Paint, glue, meths, God knows what else,
Cheapest way to face a world
Of days dimmed to gloom,
Tranquilised, anaesthetised,
Homeless… helpless…
Huddled around a fire, shivering,
Tongues of flame sputtering
In the icy wind.

Very powerful. Very moving. Very sad. Sydney has had a very cold winter this year and every night I think of the homeless people shivering on the streets. Sometimes I go out with a charity and distribute blankets and hot soup. It is rewarding but there are so many people in need it can be overwhelming. It is something our government isn’t really addressing.

Yes, it is so sad. I’m focusing on the children because of the wasted lives, but there are also the old and infirm. I just hate the society we live in where the rich get richer, etc. etc.

We need to do so much more, Brian. Especially for the children!

Tragic indeed. Little lives blighted before they have properly started.

Powerful and depressing. What the USA spends in a month in our stupid meaningless wars would probably give food, shelter, and medical attention to everyone on the planet for a year !

Innocence not understanding how they could be such victims of the greed of society in general.

Great writing Denise – very sad – homelessness is horrible but how much worse when it is cold.

Indeed, Gabrielle, this is the time of the year when I feel so guilty for being warm and fed.
