The Kiss of Fruit

The kiss
Of fruit
On my lips
Teeth pierce
Juice bursts
Tongue tastes
Heaven’s nectar
Drips
Down
My
Chin

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

  4. A beautiful poem – brings to mind eating that first fresh peach or nectarine of summer. There is nothing like it! The poem is so beautifully constructed and I could see you in it! Hope this was a true story of what you are eating at the care center!

  5. Oh Sweet Nectar…

dribbles down my chin, drip drop and then in a trickle down my neck.

  7. Sometime ago, Cindy’s post, The House At Morgan Bay, reminded me of a book I hadn’t thought about in years: Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle. Curious, I searched and found it still available on Amazon.com ~ rather amazing for a book of just over 100 poems first published in 1967!

An excerpt, “How to Eat a Poem“ by Eve Merriam, may be tantalizing enough to cause you to search out the volume for your own library:

    Don’t be polite
    Bite in.
Pick it up with your fingers and lick the juice that may run down your chin.
It is ready and ripe now, whenever you are.

    Enjoy that fruit, Denise!

  8. Lovely, this, and it reminded me of Sunkist oranges and how my youngest sister as a toddler thought they were “unkissed” oranges. 🙂

    • Hahaha, Ruth. I remember how my children got things mispronounced when they were little too. An example escapes me now, but it happened quite often, sometimes hilariously funny. I think there is a fruit juice here called ‘Joy’ which I think is very apt.

  12. I always get in trouble when I eat nectarines because the juice runs down my chin. Now I’m going to say that the fruit is kissing me. What a fabulous poem!
