I write what I feel…

Pigeons

Puffed out posturing males

Strut back and forth, back and forth,

Red eyed, with plumage shining in the sun,

But all to no avail;

They are ignored by females

Who continue without a sound

Picking food up from the ground.

  1. It is noteworthy that in the bird kingdom, it is the male that is all beautified with color to attract the female for mating.

    • Ahaa, yes, Carl, but the females weren’t having any of it. Males are the most glamorous of most species as they are bigger, often the female has just given birth and is out of condition (I’m thinking of dogs here, or even cats for that matter, male lions put the females in the shade too.). It is only the female human who has to resort to artificial means of adding to her looks, haha.

  6. And Oh ! …… how they do strut, Denise
They must be getting near the mating season down there.
Hope the walking is progressing, by the way.

    • Spring has really sprung here recently, John. No time the last few days for exercise I’m afraid. Will have to make it up tomorrow and over the weekend… 🙂

  7. Pigeons are such a hoot. I love your description of the ladies totally oblivious to their strutting males 😀

    • Aren’t they Kate. Besides seeing them at the seaside and city centres, I have had very few around any home of mine. I have mainly had doves (similar, but different). So it is interesting to watch these pigeons here. So far (to my inexperienced eye) they seem to be the same ones who turn up each day. We have a bird bath in front of our building which they seem to love!

  10. Pigeony priorities – good one, Adee 🙂 It’s funny that the males get all the beauty in the bird kingdom and yet still have to work so hard for attention.
Where we holiday every January in Victoria there is a pigeon known as the Wonga – it eats almost continuously and is the fattest pigeon I’ve ever seen, barely able to get off the ground to fly

    • Thank you so much Paula. I’m so glad you liked it. I am improving slowly and hope you are also going from strength to strength during your break. I moved this week from a room into a flatlet, or bedsitter, which I like very much. I am staying on here indefinitely and won’t be going back. No choice really and I have accepted it. Much love to you, my friend. ♥

  15. i like this poem, as there are layers of meaning for that single male pigeon. how sad that the female pigeon is busy pecking crumbs on the ground.

    • Thank you Hames. Sometimes the female of the species has to be practical, lol! Anyway, that’s how this bunch that hangs around outside my door behaves.
