View from Front Door

This was the view at dusk yesterday from my front door. The pair of Egyptian geese are regular visitors, along with the pigeons and Hadedas. They are all very tame and would come inside given half a chance.

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

    • It is interesting to watch them, Patrecia. How they interact with each other. One of the Hadedas (the one in the picture) has only one foot and he is bullied a lot, especially by the Mynah birds. The geese hold themselves quite aloof from the other birds. I am making the most of this life – what else can I do, lol!

    • I doubt they went home at all this winter, the weather has been so mild, Paul. Very slim pair, they are. Not much room for smuggling hashish, unfortunately. 😀 Bless you too.

  5. nice sight out the front door, i like nature and all its creatures…we get mostly deer and squirrels…and occassional goose that missed the pond a few streets over…

    • Yes, they are all there morning and evening. During the day it gets too hot and most of the pigeons disappear until it cools down. Then they have a free-for-all in the bird bath! What a life, eh?

  6. keep them out where they belong. i’d not like to try to chase out a hadedah if it decided inside was its place

  9. The sound of the Hadeda is such a distinctive Johannesburg sound early am and late pm, Adeeyoyo – not one I hear on this side of the world 🙂 And I see you have a lovely pink hibiscus in your view as well – very pretty

    • Yes on both counts. The Hadeda is quite distinctive in its call. So also are the geese… The hibiscus is coming into bloom and is very beautiful. Identical size bush and flower colour as I had in my previous home, except that the flower was double. I’m a little concerned about my poor one-footed Hadeda as he didn’t come around here yesterday nor yet this morning. 😦

  10. Lovely pic, Denise. And I agree with making the most of life wherever we are, too. Someone described it to me as “the sacrament of the present moment”

  12. I love seeing birds around. It really cheers me. I haven’t seen Egyptian geese before. They are lovely. You’re right about them coming in given half the chance. There is a cockatoo who has been visiting my garden for about 3 years and sometimes he just walks in the back door. It’s really cute. I’m sure he’d come in and watch TV if I let him!

    • Hahaha, Selma, I love the cockatoo tale.. Lovely! I have always thought that birds notice far more about us that we give them credit for. Btw, the one footed Hadeda is back again.

  13. Those geese are pretty cool – it’s great to have birds around (imagine if there were none – we would so miss their sounds and the sight) – thanks for sharing your backyard.
