I write what I feel…

We, in our cocoons,

Tortoises, poke out our heads

From under our shells

To check out the weather.

Living in our cells,

Prisoners with no bars,

We are our guards?

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

  1. Whether…?

The beauty of the poem lies here. We risk too little. settle for something too soon and afraid to venture out unless success is guaranteed. Even then, we shall not be the first, and see if somebody else had succeeded. By the time we venture, it would be too common place that everybody had known about it and had joined the bandwagon already. As inevitable, we would be the last in the process, fail because of competition, regret having ventured and cozily settle into our shell swearing we shall never repeat.

    So good indeed, Denise.

  2. Thank you, Sunamu. We are afraid to venture out without guarantees, it’s true. We inhibit ourselves…

  3. Prisoners with no bars,
    We are our guards

    So true.

  4. Such a vivid picture of what we do to hold ourselves back, Denise. Powerful.

  5. Written with great feeling Denise! Lovely

  6. Sounds like a winter’s day to me. Whether the weather be bad or not..

But,no prison can hold a determined spirit..

  7. We may do, adee, but it’s far safer to keep to ourselves, I think …

    • That’s true, Cin, but safer from what? I’m one of those, but I wish I could get out there and be a daredevil… instead of always wanting to play safe.

  8. But who guards us from ourselves?

  9. You have broken free Denise; the proof is in your blog, your prose, your independence. Blessings to the brave soul that you are, an inspiration.

  10. sunamu nailed it for me…we risk little…i like the dance in your words which leads to thinking and contemplation…great questioning…

  11. Such true words Adee!!!

  12. Denise, this is spot-on. I am too much of a tortoise at times…

  13. The point unstated is that since we are our own guards, we can unlock our own gates. The secret lies within ourselves.
For a long time your leg was your guard, – is it showing any signs of setting you free, Denise?

  14. You’re quite right, John, our minds are our own guards, in thinking ourselves incapable. Re my leg, I only have to go for X-rays mid-January, so things will remain the same at least until then. However, last month the doc said it would be ‘another year’ using two crutches… I am afraid to hope that it will be less, but you never know…
