I write what I feel…

Freedom

Once upon a fairy tale

In my naivety, I believed in love

And forever-after happiness

Till in disillusion I shrugged off

The cloak of self-deceit

And freed myself to breathe

To find myself, allow myself to be

With no stifling restrictions

At last I was free, the inimitable me

I found my compass to check my progress

Without which I would surely have been lost

The devil’s daughter, saved by He

Who truly set me free

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

  1. Good sentiments, Denise.

Do you know Mary Oliver’s poetry? Judith posted an excert from one of her favourites ~ The Journey :

    “One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
    though the voices around you
    kept shouting
    their bad advice–”

When we trust ourselves . . . we know how to live. 😀

  2. The hardest chains to break are the ones we wrap ourselves in. Once done though, we must keep a link, so as not to repeat. Beautiful poem Denise.

  3. It is unfortunate that the wholesome things of your opening are a deceitful illusion for many and should not be in a just world.

    but to deceive oneself

    • You’re quite right, Ben. Sometimes we think it is less painful to blind ourselves to reality. But if we want to survive, we have to remove the blindfold.

  5. Freedom indeed, Denise. But never “the devil’s daughter” I am sure.
    Possibly misguided sometimes!
A nice poem about personal growth.
    Thank you.

  6. Is there one without regrets of the past? Once we find peace within we make wiser choices.

  12. True…the poem can be cosidered as a metaphor to the feeling of a caged bird but set free for its first flight as desired.

  15. I believe everybody passes through this phase Denise, said or unsaid. Courage lies in getting hold of oneself and uplift our sagging spirit.
    Nice poem.

    • Some people accept the status quo without question, Sunamu. Others have to do something about it, depending on exactly what are the conditions of the said status quo. If we are deceiving ourselves in order to stay in a certain situation, then sooner or later one should face the truth.
