I write what I feel…

Silence is broken

Torn open

By the hoot

Of a solitary owl

And the quarter moon

Tries to hide

Behind a cloud

In the sky

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

  1. The kookaburras are guilty of the same thing here!

  2. I didn’t know that, Barb. Will google them, thanks!

  3. And so the birdies keep us awake 🙂

  4. Sounds travel so much better in the summer, nice poem Denise.

  5. The beauty of a revealed moon and the hoot of a secret admirer… 🙂

  6. The hute startled the nood mune! 🙂

  7. Took my breath away, Denise. I love the peace of the night.
With me when I was young, it was distant church bells chiming the time,
or if it was foggy, I would hear foghorns from the River Humber about five miles away. Oh, yes, and an occasional owl!

    Thank you.

    • The night is as beautiful as the day, John. Maybe not as glamorous… but it has its own appeal. I love the peace and the sound of church bells and foghorns, owls and nightjars too… Thank you too.

  8. great imagery. Sometimes I have no problem hiding behinds a cloud as one follows me blocking out the sun

    • Clouds can help a lot in keeping the sun at bay, Carl. Unfortunately here in this country the sun can burn you right through the clouds. Probably happens there too. Thanks for the comment.

  9. Very timely Denise. Just saw a naturalist’s talk on Owls last night.

  10. What a beautiful picture you have written here, Denise!

  11. Have you seen that footage of Picasso painting on a pane of glass? A few strokes and a perfect picture emerges effortlessly.

  12. very interesting piece!

  13. *smiling* at this nocturnal thriller, Adee – it would make a great intro to a gothic novel 🙂 – we have a resident owl in the bush near our house – I hear him if I wake in the middle of the night and it’s a strangely comforting sound

  14. I really like the image of the moon unclothed. WOW. That is spectacular!
