Silence is broken
Torn open
By the hoot
Of a solitary owl
And the quarter moon
Exposed
Unclothed

Tries to hide
Behind a cloud

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

You are such a romantic, Eric. Lovely start to a tale of Diana, Roman goddess of the moon. 🙂

You would be startled too, Col. if you were flying naked in the sky! Toot, toot

Took my breath away, Denise. I love the peace of the night.
With me when I was young, it was distant church bells chiming the time,
or if it was foggy, I would hear foghorns from the River Humber about five miles away. Oh, yes, and an occasional owl!
Thank you.

The night is as beautiful as the day, John. Maybe not as glamorous… but it has its own appeal. I love the peace and the sound of church bells and foghorns, owls and nightjars too… Thank you too.

great imagery. Sometimes I have no problem hiding behinds a cloud as one follows me blocking out the sun

Clouds can help a lot in keeping the sun at bay, Carl. Unfortunately here in this country the sun can burn you right through the clouds. Probably happens there too. Thanks for the comment.

Very timely Denise. Just saw a naturalist’s talk on Owls last night.

There is quite a lot of superstition here in SA so owls are always threatened unfortunately.

Have you seen that footage of Picasso painting on a pane of glass? A few strokes and a perfect picture emerges effortlessly.

Thank you, Ben. I was embarrassed because there really is no comparison. But thank you for thinking there is. I am not good at receiving compliments. I am happy you think the poem even remotely comparable. 😀

*smiling* at this nocturnal thriller, Adee – it would make a great intro to a gothic novel 🙂 – we have a resident owl in the bush near our house – I hear him if I wake in the middle of the night and it’s a strangely comforting sound

Seeing the moon quietly sliding behind the cloud, Selma, brought this image to mind. I mean why else would she hide, haha?
