The soft kiss of rain

On cracked, arid earth

Awakens hormones

Releases pheromones

Igniting life

Inciting breath

And ultimately death

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

  2. Denise,

I think the last line somehow takes away the charm of the Title and all the lines before. True, there is bliss in death in such a soft kiss. Yet, the evocative feelings of kiss and pheromones stand in contrast to the abating feelings of the last line.

    • Thanks, Murty, for your comment. I can see that the last line is a shock, but I (and many others) don’t believe that death is the end. I believe, as do you I think, that life just takes a different form after death. I agree that the poem ends rather abruptly though. Perhaps one day I will modify the ending.

  3. Very thoughtful poem, adee. Yes, I guess that death is inevitable for everything that once has life. Sad but true.

  6. You have taken the “circle of life” and put it in tender phrases, Denise. Kudos!

  7. Enjoyed all but the last line. It broke the promise of rebirth.

    • To me, Nancy, death is not the end. Just a new beginning…

    • Oh, I agree. The poem just seems to start with Spring . . . and then jump straight to Winter. Too abrupt a passage.

      • You’re quite right, Nancy. But you know, to me, as I get older I feel when I look at past years, they seem to have just flown by in the blink of an eye! I think that may be what influenced me to jump through all the other seasons. Perhaps the poem would be improved by inserting a comma on either side of the word ‘ultimately’…

  8. Yup, it’s all part of the package. And what is death but an open door? I see no sadness in it, other than missing the physical presence of loved ones who are nevertheless as much (or more) a part of me as they were when in the flesh. I like the completeness of your poem, and the title too, very much.

  9. The last line took me by surprise, Denise. But then I thought of my birth dream, and I’m not sure there isn’t a link there
    Thank you

    • There is a definite link, John. It was your use of the word ‘birth’ that made me look at death differently. I believe that we are born into our new life after death. Thank you for your comment and also for your post!

And then … renewal. It’s an eternal circle, surely?

    • It seems to me that Death always surprises us. Or we are first taken by surprise by an illness that leads to death. Whatever, or however it comes… we are seldom prepared.
