ACCOUNTABILITY

She’s made herself a beast of burden,
saddled with the liability
(deemed to be a necessity),
saddened by her inability
thus increasing the complexity,
as she’s an avid defendant
and therefore a co-dependant
which, in all the confusion,
appears to be a delusion.

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

  1. interesting…a ragther complex character sketch in this…sounds like shes got a lot going on but cant do it all herself…the tie to the mothers prayer as well is a little more talling too…interesting…

  2. Both she and her son have been to various societies for help. She refuses to do the ‘tough love’ thing and so this has gone on for at least a year. He begs, stilll smokes, drinks meths, sits in the gutter outside this home (where she lives) waiting for her to join him and bring food, sleeps in the park… And I believe she has another son in almost the same position. Now they are trying to evict her…

    • Problem, Hope, is that he needs her – and she needs to be needed. And no-one can help them because of this. Btw, he is in his late 40’s! They have to be separated before they can be helped (which has been tried, but I think not for long enough). Terrible situation.

  5. Sensitivity while it is adorable, puts the person always in some uncomfortable position no matter whether the person can cope up with it or not. There in lies the risk and the commensurate rewards (personal satisfaction) as well.

    • It appears that as long as his mother is there to ‘help’ him, he will never find the strength to beat his addiction and I’m afraid he will have no future. She is preventing him from reaching the absolute bottom of the pit so that he feels desperate enough to fight for survival. It is so sad to watch as she believes she is helping him.

  6. Denise, I have a friend who, with his wife, had to let go and cut the ties with their daughter. She is now recovered from her addiction and is back home with them.

    • Thank you for telling me that, John. I have been wondering whether anyone else knew of such a case. I am really disliking the helplessness of watching this play out.

  7. Very sad indeed. Drugs are such a terrible affliction.
