Pilanesberg – Raptor Look-out

One morning on our way to one of the hides where we hoped to see an hippopotamus we came across an enormous herd of elephant. All sizes and all ages. They were on both sides of the road and at arm’s length from the car. I managed to get a few photo’s to show just how close they were.

This particular hide was situated on stilts and was partially over the dam. The floor was made of wooden planks, laid slightly apart from each other so we were able to look through the gaps at the water below. We could see something in the water, but were unsure whether it was a turtle or even just a piece of flotsam. Then it gave a sort of loud grunt and, still mostly submerged, it floated out from under the hide. This was our best view of it and unfortunately we didn’t see it again although we went back to the hide several times during our stay.

Watching & Waiting

Blue, blue, the sky is blue
Mirrored in the surface of the water too
As they bend their heads to drink
I wonder what the creatures think
The wind sifts the sand in a giant sieve
Leaving patterns in the rock face where the insects live
The beetle rolls his dung ball with his eggs inside
While we sit as quiet as mice in the man-made hide

    • It was great, but a bit scary because I think one of the bulls was in musth and he looked very unpredictable as well as being a little too close for comfort.

  4. An enjoyable set of words and pictures indeed.
I take it the raptor decided not to try and snack on the elephant! Or the hippo! Lovely shot of the hippo – it just shows what can lie hidden in an innocent little lake.

    • I like to imagine that some of them do think, or wonder… look at my pics of giraffe tomorrow. You can almost read his mind, Brian – what an expression of puzzlement!

  12. I LOVE dung beetles – they are so tenacious 🙂 I once worked for a chap who was bitten by a hippo in the stomache and survived. Great photos, Adee.

  13. Gosh, BB. How dreadful… the one in my photo yawned and there was this HUGE open mouth with two bottom incisors(?) that must have been at least two feet long. It was too quick for me to take advantage of though, but everyone in the hide gasped! I have heard of people being bitten in half by a rhino and, after seeing those teeth, I’m not surprised.

I think dung beetles are tremendously strong for their size to push that great big ball… 🙂
