I write what I feel…

Innocence Departed

I don’t believe

…that children have no conscience

I don’t believe

…that children don’t know right from wrong

So innocent and trusting

that the world will leave its muddy footprint on

I do believe

…that children come from God

…that their first lies are caused by fear

Huge eyes are filled with wonder

Before the cracks in trust appear

Before they learn to hide their face

Before the mask falls into place

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

  1. How much of what they learn is an inheritance of our own fears and distortions?

  2. More than we would like to know, would be my guess, Ben.

  3. This is very true, adee. You’ve expressed your thoughts very well.

  4. and we teach them….so much gets lost when they transition from childhood…very nice piece adee….

  5. In many cases. But not always. There is nurture, and there is nature. Some kids display unwarranted antisocial tendencies from earliest age, even when siblings of the same circumstances do not.

  6. I replied to this, Col, but I see it has disappeared.

I read a number of years ago of studies carried out on identical and non-identical twins and nature/nurture. This, however, is just what I observed from my various nieces’ and nephews’ behaviour.
