Autumn Loves, Leaves
.
Autumn leaves rain down
Slowly, steadily covering the ground
Tho’ summer’s leaves remain
In abundance on the trees.
‘twill be months before the boughs are bare
But for now the beauty of diverse hues
Reflect, both above and below, bedecked
In summer and autumn’s greens and golds.
The most beautiful of all seasons,
Autumn bridges the times of plenty
With the times of hardship; one foot
On the earth, the other in the grave;
’tis the season I most love.

Golden leaves drift gently on the breeze
Whispering through the air, winter is nearing,
Coldness is raising its fingers of ice,
Reaching, stroking, freezing the earth
And the leaves gather around on the ground
Mourning the mini-death, simulating sorrow
As if there’s no tomorrow, but most of us know
That all-Ready summer is on its way,
And winter’s stay is restrained, contained
To only a few months of the year where
We recover from summer’s unrelenting heat
And so the beat of life continues its circle
Round… and round… in an eternal revolving ring
Around the sun…

Intractable, invincible,
Relentless, unstoppable,
Inexorable, inescapable, unavoidable,
Time…
Youth fades as the dew falls,
Seasons come and go,
Life can last for a minute, an hour, a day,
A week, a month, a year, a decade,
But never… forever…
As things are now.
Time takes its toll:
We can run the race,
Keep up the pace,
But when our time is up,
Our place in space complete,
Our life on earth replete,
There is no escape.
Our golden years are all too short
And autumn leaves must fall
Until spring’s new shoots take bud
For a spectacular new birth.

Winter arrived in a flash last night;
cold blue skies with clouds of white,
but the trees remain green with a hint of gold
tho’ ice in the air is FREEZing cold.
He came in a woollen hat and scarf,
a greatcoat covered his expansive girth
up to his neck and down to his boots
which trampled their frost on growing roots.
Too early, too early we cried out loud
the trees are standing tall and proud
and their autumn gowns are not yet set
they still have a time to get ready yet.
Give us a month to admire and enjoy
leaves changing colour before you destroy
their autumn shades of reds and golds,
riches to our eyes above precious stones.

Summer’s leaves begin to fade,
Yellowed in the last hot sun;
Morning air is cool and fresh,
Autumn’s slow advance begun.
Growth slows, awaiting frost,
Nights grow longer, colder too,
Lengthened evenings by the fire
Give more time to spend with you.

The early morning air
Has a chilly hint of cold
Whispering in my ear
A sweet reminder that
Autumn is almost here
Summer is moving past
Her flowers withered by the sun
We need the autumn respite
Before the winter comes

I have just received this from my friend, Joan, in Canada, and thought you would enjoy it:

Autumn Falls
~~~
A tentative breeze
Wafts through the trees
And fall-coloured leaves
Of inconceivable hues
Drift down to the ground.
With barely a sound
They carpet the floor
Leaving us speechless,
Astounded in awe,
By beauty sacrificed
As before.
Changing Seasons
~~~
Summer is almost gone
And Autumn’s on its way
Trees of green and red and gold
Stunning scenes of coloured leaves
Against an azure sky
Each season is its own reward
But nothing can compare
With Autumn’s exhibition
Of splendour to the eye
