I write what I feel…

TEARS

Tears I wept for broken dreams

A dove with broken wings

Raised in captivity

Treated with brutality

No escape for naivety

.

Let it be a learning curve

Tis the least that I deserve

Add it to experience

I nurse no grievances

It is of no consequence

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

  1. I enjoyed your word choice ~ experience, grievances, consequence

Like you, I “nurse no grievances” and I try not to dwell on past hurts and disappointments ~ I refuse to give “the bastards” continued power over me.

    Be Here Now. 😀

  2. beautiful poem, and the message that you send is really terrific, we should never dwell on the bad things that happen to us, we should let the emotions out, and then try our best to move on.. 😀

  3. Well said – and giving it voice like you do facilitates the letting go…

  4. Of life: Cherish the good, banish the bad, but always, move on.
Deeply felt, no doubt. But, the best works of the poet require the deepest of feeling.

    • Excellent advice Jack, thank you. Sometimes it is hard to put things in writing, ie to put them out in the open, but it does act as a catharsis prior to ‘banishing’ them!

  5. Gosh, this makes me sad, Adeeyoyo – ’tis the very least that any human deserves – to begin life with love. Banishing the bad is not a simple matter, but writing about it certainly helps toward this goal

  7. Beautifully said, but can one ever come to regard broken dreams as of no consequence? Difficult, indeed.

    • I think that often we have to give up our original dreams and are led/pushed into other paths either to live a different life than what we’d hoped, or as another way towards our original, or perhaps better, dream. Quite complicated, eh? I do hope I’m right, Col. 😉

  8. You are right Adeeyoyo. If we cry about yesterday, fret over tomorrow, we lose the joy of today.

  9. I know nobody likes crying. But tears somehow help us feel lighter. Help us vent out the negative feelings.

    • Yes, you are right. Weeping releases all the bottled up tensions and feelings and does leave us feeling much better. From that respect it is actually good to have a good cry…

  10. I like the sense of hope at the end of this. It is good to have a cry. I am a real advocate of a good wail – it gets everything out and then we can start to move forward….

  11. Yes, I’ve learnt that too, Selma. No more bottling things in for me…
