Silver Fish

.

Flash of silver quick as lightning

Fleet of fin (ha) they catch a ride

On the backwash of each wave

Taking shelter behind cropped rocks

Knowing the music of the sea

Feeling the rhythm of the water

Breathing in, breathing out

Anticipating even the crabs’

Sideways stagger —

Silent hunters of the ocean floor —

Confident of the secret pathways

Shortcuts made to aid escape

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

  1. Ha. After spending hte last couple weeks at the beach, I like the visuals. You know we did not see much in the way of crab, even sand crab. Maybe it does not go that far south. Anyway, I love the life you inject into this.

  2. You ‘lucky fish’ I always wanted to retire to either a place on the beach or on the top of a mountain, lol! Crabs give me the creeps!!! Some places if you sit still for a while they come out of their holes in the sand and there are, well, LOTS of them.
