Wolves
(Canis lupus)
The dark shadows moved across the snow-covered plain.
The leader stopped and raised his face to the moon.
He stretched his neck and howled
And one by one the others joined in –
Like links of a chain reaching across the land;
Hundreds upon hundreds of howling wolves.
Then, as if on command, silence,
And the grey shadows continued their inexorable advance
Across the silvery landscape
Obeying the instints of centuries.
