I write what I feel…

The Rut

.

While walking in the fields one day

I fell into a rut,

The floor so deep

And sides so steep

I could not get purchase for my feet.

I cried out, “If I were rich

I would gladly give my all

For help to get me out of here!”

He came and leant across the gap

And said, “I understand,

Pass me your hand,”

Then pulled me up whereupon

I thanked Him and continued on

My way on feet of clay.

I am a middle-aged South African woman, living in Johannesburg. I began writing poetry towards the end of May 2010. I love animals – sometimes more than people! I am back after a break. Thanks for still being here, if you are! Missed you! xxx

  1. smiles…it is good to have compassionate people around when we fall in those ruts…to pick us back up and help us on our way…

  2. This is a really nice poem. I can’t help feeling you have some kind of hidden message behind it

  3. A power allegory, with just a tinge of criticism, perhaps? Unless, of course, I am (as usual) overthinking.

    • I wasn’t aware of being critical when I wrote it, nor on reading it, Ben. I just wanted to point out that, in my life, God has come to my rescue time and time again. Not always as I expected (this was rather over-simplified), but nevertheless being in my best interest. What gave you that idea? I do think that you are very sensitive to language and I have probably missed something.

      • I was reading it as saying that people ask God for help, offering to

        “… gladly give my all
For help to get me out of here”

then, once He has, they just

“I thanked Him and continued on
My way on feet of clay.”

I sometimes use first person narrative in a poem, inviting the reader to identify with whatever is described. I did not realise this was more of a confession. Mea culpa,

BTW, the “Notify me of follow-up comments via email.” tick box no longer appears when I make a comment on one of your posts. I checked out the settings on “Blogs I Follow” at the WP reader, and it still says

“You get instant post and instant comment emails for this blog”

but this is not happening. Any ideas?

        • You are absolutely right, Ben. I remember at the time of starting to write I thought it would tell how, once we have been helped, we return to our old way of life, then I thought it would complicate the poem too much so I left it up to the reader…

As far as WordPress is concerned it has become unreliable for quite a while now. I have learned to live with it and find another way around the problem. There always seem to be things that don’t work, but they change from time to time. Actually it began when the News24 bloggers all came over. Overall, though, I think it is OK. Also I never ask for email notifications any longer, I prefer to go down my list and the following time I start at the bottom. I must say I do like the ‘star’ at the top right of the screen. It does save a lot of time to reply there.

    • Hi Kieran. Nice to see you again after all this time. Had a squiz at your blog and I see you are still writing – good. You have a great talent – too good to waste! And I see your spelling has improved!!! The language is a bit overdone (f**k-word). When you use it too often it loses its impact. I liked some of what I saw and would like to read more, as you mature (rhyme, lol). Please don’t lock us out again. Tks for getting in touch. Btw, how’s school?

      • Thankyou 🙂 I’v been trying to post more and more lately
Yeah schools okay I guess, I still have bad sleeping issues though, so I’m trying to tackle that issue whilst doing my HSC, which is making things difficult, but I just keep my head up, focus on what I do have instead of what I don’t, I’m making a short film at the moment, and I’m planning on adding some poetry in here and there so yeah, things are pretty swell 🙂
Glad to hear from you but, my blog has had tumble-weeds blowing across it lately haha 😐

        • Sounds great! Don’t worry about the tumble-weeds. we all have to contend with them from time to time and sometimes something good comes out of the struggle, lol. Also sometimes struggling is good for US – makes us strong. See you around and good luck with the film. 😀
