Innocence

A fluffy little bundle of white,
Head up and tail held high,
Tripped confidently across
The street between the cars,
Drivers unable to see.
I held my breath as wheels
Passed him by on either side
But his luck failed at last
And he went tumbling head over
Heels as the cars went past…
Innocence goes hand in hand
With trust and disappears
Sometimes s-l-o-w-l-y, sometimes
Gently, but oft times too-fast-to-see,
Ground under the wheels of life.
